I got on the internet today and this article was the first thing that caught my eye. 6-career-killing-facebook-mistakes is the title of the article. The article talks about six reasons why facebook can hurt your job opportunities. The first reason is inappropriate pictures, this is reasonable because now over 30% of companies use facebook as a way to screen a potential employee and if they see pictures of you wasted it's not going to make you look that good. The second reason is complaining about your current job. I mean if a boss looks at your post and sees that you hate your job he/she might just releive you of those duties. The third reason is posting conflicting information to your resume. The example the article give is that if you say that you have a degree from Harvard and on your facebook it says that you graduated from UCLA you will probably be cut from interviews. The fourth reason is statuses you wouldn't want your boss to see. If you put that your boss is so stupid for this and that reason you probably wont have to worry about it anymore because you will be fired. The fifth reason is not understanding your security settings. You can set your facebook to only allow friends you want to see your facebook homepage. This could solve all your problems right off the bat. I know a lot of people have this setting up and I agree that everyone should have it on so that perverts and other weird people cannot see your personal information. The sixth and final reason losing by association. I think this is the most true, if you have pictures of you and your friends drinking and what not it will look really bad on you. Even if you don't have a drink in your hand and all your friend do this makes you look like a partier and no boss wants that. It also says at the very end that you should have two facebooks one that is yours for friends and one that is just for professional use. Overall I agree with this article. A lot of people I know from back home have gotten fired becuase of inapropriate things on thier facebook. People do put studpid things on facebook, some things I don't even know what they were thinking. I beleive a lot more companies are going to start using these social networks to do background checks on potential employees. This might make people clean up thier acts a little but I doubt it, they will probably just make their profiles private and create another facebook for perfessional use only.

I agree with you mike. People should watch what they put on their facebook. I know alot of people that put alot of things on their facebook that shouldnt be. Granted things do get on facebook that maybe you didnt want to be like pictures from a party and your in the background.Even though you might be tagged in the picture you can un-tag yerself so it wont show up on your profile. But peopel do need to watch what they post on thier facebook, espically if they are seeking a successful career.
ReplyDeleteI saw this article also and i would think people who have jobs would know better not to place innapropriate pictures of themselves and talk crap about their jobs on facebook. But i guess i am proven wrong.I went on facebook one day and one of my friends wrote about their boss and not thinking, they were friends with their boss on facebook and she gave it to him on a comment back. Seriously, that is just embarrasing! I felt embarrassed for him because she seriously told him off and not to come to work if he had that type of attitude. People need to be careful what they put on their facebooks, make it private and dont add your boss if your going to talk trash about them or your job.
ReplyDeleteFacebook is starting to take over some people's lives it seems. Some of my friends seem to post what they are doing every second of the day. I have my facebook set to security so only my friends can see what I have on my profile but it is shocking to know you could lose your job. I have heard this before and it must be true if people have been through that situation. People need to be a little smarter about the things they post and do.
ReplyDeleteI agree the items people post on their Facebook are many times in appropriate. The items I see a lot are people who are drinking when there are underage. What part of these pictures would make an employer accept any resume that an individual may hand in? I can not believe how people in our generation are so oblivious to the fact of what they do now will come to bite them later. I know that I always try and keep my profile clean and presentable to anyone who may view my profile so the person may get a great first impression. I have at times complained about professors and class work, but I try to keep it to a minimum, for the fact that no employer wants to higher someone that complains all the time. Which is I agree is something a lot of people slip up on.
